Anyone working online today has to be careful about the reputation they are building for themselves. Whatever you write (whether it be an article, a comment, or a profile on a social networking site) is there forever. So it's important to learn what to do to build a good reputation.
This became very clear to me after a conversation I had with a woman on Facebook. This woman is a top leader in her network marketing company. In our conversation, she revealed that she's new to Facebook and has already had her Facebook account spammed by people trying to sell her their products and business.
Unfortunately, there are many people engaging in this type of activity. A simple rule of thumb is to think how you would feel if you were on the receiving end of something. If it wouldn't feel good for you, then don't do it to others.
It's common sense really. How often do you approach people you don't know and start telling them about your business? Hopefully not very often. So why would you do that with people you meet online?
If you're new to internet marketing, and have not yet heard the term attraction marketing, then that is a great starting point to build knowledge and understanding. In a nutshell, attraction marketing involves leveraging the Internet to attract qualified people to you by providing valuable information that meets your target market's needs.
Here are three things that students of attraction marketing should do to create a positive and lasting Internet presence.
1. Commitment
Be committed to learning everything you can about internet and attraction marketing. There is a ton of great information on social networking sites like Hubpages, Squidoo and Better Networker.
Anyone who is serious about their business should also join a training program to learn the skills required to be successful. You will want to do your own research to discover the programs/mentors that are the best fit for you. 2. Credibility
Attraction marketing is all about creating value for your target market so they approach you and initiate the business relationship. Ultimately, people are going to be attracted to those who have credibility.
To achieve credibility in the online world, you need to present yourself as a professional who is willing and able to help people with their needs. You lose credibility when you flash your products and services in people's faces. Instead, brand yourself as someone of value, and let your products and services take a backseat. Come from an honest place of wanting to help others, and your credibility will shine through.
And when people perceive you as someone with credibility and integrity, it will naturally follow that they will want to do business with you. That might not mean they will join your team (right away or in fact ever). But it will mean that you can work together and support one another to reach your goals.
3. Collaboration
Interacting with others is at the heart of internet marketing and Web 2.0. By connecting with people we meet online, we can literally shape the face of the Internet. Creating relationships with people we meet online also gives us the opportunity to build a community of collaboration and mutual support.
There are many ways to collaborate with people online. One simple way is to share valuable content and information. Another way is to comment on other people's content. Meeting people on social networking sites and getting to know them is another excellent opportunity for collaboration. There are unlimited possibilities to the kinds of collaborative relationships you can develop. You might help one another by "bookmarking" each others articles. Or you can barter your services (e.g. coaching support in exchange for article writing). You can cross promote one another by including links on your site/articles to their site/articles.
The bottom line is that although you might be alone at your desk, you are not alone. There are some great resources, programs, sites, and people here to help you. And as you continue to learn and grow, you will be able to return the favor to others as well. And that is when things really get to be fun!
